Your chance to shine
Your interview is your chance to shine. This is where you can really sell yourself so it’s important to be prepared. Although no interview follows the same pattern, increase your chances of success by following some key points.
1. Don’t turn up late
This sounds like common sense but you’d be surprised how many people still turn up late for interviews. Turning up late instantly puts you on the back foot so make sure you leave plenty of travel time, you’re fully aware of the location, where to park, where to sign in and who you should ask for at reception.
2. Look presentable
Try to get a feel for the company culture and dress appropriately. Many interviewers will take note of your appearance so make sure you dress to impress!
3. Do plenty of research beforehand
Preparation is key to a successful interview. Solid People will provide you with detailed information about the company, however, your research should not be limited to this. Visit the company’s website and look for recent news articles and press releases. You should be knowledgeable about the company’s history, product, structure and industries they serve.
4. Just relax and be yourself
This is sometimes easier said than done. It’s important that your personality comes through in your interview so try to control the nerves and just be yourself.
5. Ask questions
An interview is as much your opportunity to suss out whether the job is right for you as it is the employer's opportunity to assess your skills. Make sure you ask all the questions that are important to you. You need to decide whether you want to pursue this job so don’t be afraid to ask questions.
6. How have I done?
It’s not a bad thing to ask the interviewer how you’ve done. This can show enthusiasm and keenness if approached in the right way. It’s also a good idea to ask what the next steps are and when you will hear from them. If you’re keen to progress then it’s important you tell them.
