SolidWorks have recently announced the release of eDrawings for the Apple iPad making it easier to view, share and collaborate your 3D designs ‘on the go’. Key capabilities include:

• Review AutoCAD DWG and DXF files, SolidWorks parts, assemblies, and drawings
• Open files from email or iTunes File Sharing
• Zoom, pan, and rotate 2D or 3D CAD data with the touch of a finger
• View 3D animations, 3D standard views, and 2D drawing views
• Browse assembly components tree, configurations, and drawing sheets
• View designs in full screen – just double tap to expand it on the screen
• Store files on your iPad through iTunes Files Sharing

Dassault Systems still going strong

The Q1 results for Dassault Systems have been publised and it's clear to see the CAD giant is still going strong wiith healthy growth. A good indication that their CAD products CATIA and SolidWorks are still selling well. A summary of results can be seen below:

Dassault Q1 Revenue Up 13% to €462.4M ($612M) with €73.2M ($95M) Profit

Solid People are a young, dynamic and ambitious 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) recruitment company based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. We work with clients all over the UK from a whole host of industries including furniture, machinery, marine, automotive, medical and product design. If a company designs something then they’re a potential client to Solid People.

The role

As a CAD Recruitment Consultant your duties will involve developing business relationships with Clients to uncover new job vacancies. You’ll use our extensive candidate network to find suitable applicants for client vacancies, as well as advertise and market vacancies using various forms of media.

It will be your responsibility to work with potential applicants. They’ll be assessed by you, be put forward for interviews, and be given interview feedback. You’ll be involved in the whole recruitment cycle, from building the relationship with the Client and gaining the vacancy, to attracting the applicants and filling the position.

No previous recruitment experience is required as full training will be given.

Our approach to recruitment is slightly different. We look to employ people with CAD skills. Our clients find it refreshing to know that we appreciate how their products are designed and understand the CAD packages they use. That’s why we’re interested in those with some form of CAD experience.

Have you used AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Pro/Engineer or SolidEdge? If you’ve used any industry leading CAD software then that’s a tick in the box for us.

SolidWorks 2012 - Beta Testing Time

OK so it's that time of year again...Just as you've upgraded to SolidWorks 2011, had your update training and got used to the new features in 2011, SolidWorks 2012 is on its way.

As they do each year, SolidWorks are inviting their user community to download and test the new SolidWorks 2012 beta product. This is an essential part of the development process as SolidWorks get real world feedback on what's working and what’s not. Getting this process right, and getting as many customers participating as possible, means fewer bugs when 2012 is finally released.

New Autodesk Inventor Certifications for Graduates

Autodesk have announced new certifications for graduates who are looking to secure their first design job. The Autodesk Certified User program gives graduates an opportunity to validate their Inventor design skills which could prove invaluable when competing for entry level jobs.

Joe Astroth, chief education officer at Autodesk goes on to say:

“Whether during the college application process or a job search, students are often looking for ways to set themselves apart from their peers and gain a leg up on the competition. Our Certified User program provides validation of their skills and helps them continue their pursuit of careers in design.”

For recent design graduates it may well be worth looking into this certification. It's another accreditation to add to your CV and will help to differentiate you from others.

Autodesk look for Mac users

We've just learned that Autodesk are looking for Mac users to join in their CAD research study. It seems Autodesk are keen to bring their CAD tools to the Apple Mac industry, and as such need volunteers to support their ongoing development work.

If you're an Apple Mac user and frequently work with CAD tools such as Inventor or AutoCAD then Autodesk would be interested in hearing from you.

You'd be asked to give up 1 hour of your time and will involve testing some pre-release features, answering questions, and giving feedback. You'll be working on a 1 to 1 basis with an Autodesk developer. As a thank you for your time you'll receive a £40 Amazon voucher.

Autodesk release AutoCAD WS for Android

Autodesk have announced the imminent release of AutoCAD WS for use on the Android platform. This should prove to be a very useful product for those looking to edit, view and share their CAD data on the move.

Tal Weiss, AutoCAD WS software development manager from Autodesk goes on to say:

“Architects, engineers and designers have clearly communicated that they want access to their AutoCAD projects on their Android devices and we are more than happy to meet their needs. The impressive and consistent growth of the Android ecosystem serves as an excellent platform for Autodesk to further expand its accessibility through AutoCAD WS. Now our customers with Android smartphones and tablets can use AutoCAD WS to collaborate with colleagues in the field, and across the globe, on a wider variety of mobile devices.”

AutoCAD WS users will be able to use intuitive mark-up tools, open CAD drawings from email attachments, upload CAD drawings through the integrated online tab, synchronise files from the web and save CAD drawings locally.

Record Breaking Sales for SpaceClaim in 2010

Arguably the leader in Direct 3D Modeling, SpaceClaim, have announced their 2010 results and they make for interesting reading. It's clear that SpaceClaim achieved rapid growth in 2010 trippling their sales from the previous year and securing high profile clients such as LG Electronics and Tyco Electronics.

SpaceClaim may not be the household name that say SolidWorks or Inventor are, however, these results show that they're steadily picking up market share as companies buy in to their USP.

If you've not heard of or taken a look at SpaceClaim before then it's certainly worth checking out their website and watching some demo's on Youtube. It may not be a direct replacement for CAD tools such as SolidWorks or Inventor, however it could certainly support the front end creative element of your design process.
